Nominations open for MVAA's 'I Am a Veteran' campaign
February 18, 2026
LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency (MVAA) is accepting nominations for their ‘I Am a Veteran’ campaign, an ongoing initiative that highlights the diverse experiences, service and resilience of veterans and their dependents in Michigan. The campaign aims to motivate veterans to identify and get connected to the benefits they earned for their service.
“When fellow veterans see their experiences recognized and respected, it strengthens connection, reduces isolation and reinforces that their service and lives are valued,” said MVAA director Terry J. Sabo. “The ‘I Am a Veteran’ campaign creates space for their stories to be shared and heard.”
The ‘I Am a Veteran’ campaign is designed to recognize underserved and underrepresented veterans in Michigan who have served their country in the U.S. Armed Forces. The campaign is focused on highlighting the fact that everyone who served in the military is a veteran regardless of race, ethnicity, sexual identity, socioeconomic status or other factors, and has a right to access benefits they earned through their service. By directly addressing challenges many veterans face such as PTSD, racism, sexism and difficult transition to civilian life, the MVAA seeks to strengthen the veteran community and stem veteran suicide.
Selected stories may be featured on the agency’s website, in television and radio advertising and on social media.
Veterans of all backgrounds and eras are encouraged to tell their stories. Dependents of veterans are also encouraged to tell their loved one’s story. To submit a story, fill out the nomination form and send it to MVAA-Newsroom@michigan.gov.
