Michigan Colleges and Universities Encouraged to Apply for up to $200,000 to Re-enroll Adult Students

New competitive Re-enrollment Services grant funding will support personalized outreach and coaching to reengage adults with some college and no degree

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Lifelong Education, Advancement, and Potential (MiLEAP) today announced the launch and opening of applications for the new Re‑Enrollment Services Grant, a competitive funding opportunity designed to help Michigan colleges and universities reengage adults who previously stopped out of college before completing a degree.

Michigan’s statewide Sixty by 30 goal calls for 60% of working age adults to hold a postsecondary credential by 2030. Reengaging adults with some college and no degree is essential to achieving this goal. These students often face complex barriers – including work and caregiving responsibilities, financial constraints, and difficulty navigating institutional systems – that can make returning to college challenging without direct, personalized support.

“Re‑enrollment efforts are critical to helping adult learners reconnect with higher education and complete the credentials that unlock economic opportunity,” said Dr. Beverly Walker‑Griffea, executive director of MiLEAP. “Through this grant, we are supporting Michigan institutions in building sustained, proactive outreach strategies that meet adult learners where they are and help them take the next step toward completion.”

The Re‑Enrollment Services Grant will provide awards of up to $200,000 to Michigan community and Tribal colleges and public universities. Funding may be used to provide vendor-contracted personalized outreach and coaching to stopped‑out students or to expand existing vendor‑supported re‑enrollment efforts already underway at an institution. All activities must align with MiLEAP’s statewide higher education goals and institutional strategies to increase student success.

“Many Michigan adults are just a few steps away from completing a degree or credential that could significantly improve their economic stability,” said Sarah Szurpicki, deputy director of MiLEAP’s Office of Higher Education. “Institutions know these students best. This grant gives them the resources to partner with experienced vendors who specialize in re‑engaging former students and helping them return with confidence and support.”
