Assistance with Convictions & Expungements (ACE) Division
The Assistance with Convictions & Expungements (ACE) Division is a combination of four sections:
- Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) - The mission of the CIU is to investigate claims of innocence to determine whether there is clear and convincing new evidence that a convicted person was not the person who committed the offense for which he or she was convicted.
- Wrongful Imprisonment Compensation Act (WICA) - In 2016, the Michigan Legislature passed Act 343 of 2016, creating a dedicated fund to compensate individuals where a criminal conviction has been overturned. The WICA section is a litigation section charged with evaluating those claims in a civil trial court (Court of Claims). If a trial occurs, it is a bench trial.
- Expungement Unit - This unit is responsible for assisting in the setting aside of eligible criminal convictions.
- Job Court - This initiative is intended to bring together law enforcement, courts, and private employers to divert eligible defendants out of the criminal justice system and into employment situations.
