Contact the Michigan Department of State (MDOS)

It is not standard protocol for the Michigan Department of State (MDOS) to change driver license or personal identification numbers due to fraud.

MDOS is also not able to resolve traffic citations that are wrongfully on a driving record. Such issues would need to be resolved directly with the law enforcement agency that issued the citation.

You may consider requesting the following from MDOS:

driving record alert (PDF) be placed on your record. Provides notice to law enforcement that they should verify the subject’s identity when your license number is presented; and

A copy of your motor vehicle record (fee is $11).

You should file a police report. Take along: ID, proof of your address, and proof of theft. You will be provided with a copy.

Police departments are required to take your report under MCL 762.10C and MCL 780.754A.

Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC)

Contact the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to report identity theft and to obtain a recovery plan. Include as many details as possible.

Make it more difficult for a fraudster to obtain credit in your name. By contacting just one of the three credit reporting agencies (CRAs), the other two will be notified of your fraud alert request.
