Shanaviah Canales

Project Manager

Shanaviah Canales is an enrolled member of Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians located in North Carolina. She has over twenty-five years working in the criminal justice and social work fields from urban, rural and Tribal communities. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Criminal Justice and a Masters in Human Behavior from Capella University. She began her professional career at Muskegon Friend of the Court and Juvenile Court, which lead her to child welfare where she worked as a foster care worker.

In 2015, she began working for Little River Band of Ottawa Indians where she developed the Victim Services Program and managed federal and state grants to sustain the program and victim needs. During this time, she advocated for Indigenous survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault and participated on various DV/SA coordinating councils across a nine-county service area. Shanaviah also is the co-founder of Manistee Domestic Violence & Sexual Assault Task Force and currently serves as a Secretary on the Board of Directors of Uniting Three Fires Against Violence.

As of March 2025, she accepted a job with State of MI Department of Attorney General overseeing the Michigan Native Boarding School criminal investigation.
