Native Boarding School Investigation
Native Boarding School Investigation
Native Boarding School Investigation
Background
The Michigan Department of Attorney General (DAG) has launched a comprehensive criminal investigation into the Indian boarding schools and other institutions that were located throughout the state of Michigan. We would like to speak with anyone who has firsthand knowledge, witnessed, and/or were a victim of crimes that were committed in these schools.
The DAG has investigative subpoena power which is the authority to obtain search warrants if probable cause can be demonstrated to a judge. The Department can also begin a criminal prosecution if sufficient evidence exists to support charges.
The focus of this initiative is to conduct a comprehensive criminal investigation into these crimes. Criminal prosecution may be an available outcome. The Department is committed to memorializing our investigative efforts in a report that will be made available to the public while honoring culture and privacy.
