LANSING – Today, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, with a coalition of 20 attorneys general, secured a preliminary injunction (PDF) to stop the dismantling of the Department of Education (DOE). The preliminary injunction stops the targeted destruction of this critical federal agency that ensures tens of millions of students receive a quality education and critical resources.
“The Department of Education provides essential support for millions of students, families, and educators across Michigan,” Nessel said. “The unconstitutional dismantling of this agency would have stripped critical resources from students with disabilities, children living in poverty, those experiencing homelessness, and Michiganders pursuing higher education. I am proud to have secured this preliminary injunction and will continue to fight to ensure Michigan students have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed.”
The State of Michigan receives approximately $1.5 billion in federal education funding. This funding supports the state’s students who qualify for special education services through the federal Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, aids young children enrolled in Early On Services, and funds the Title I-V programs, including those for migrant and indigenous education programs, English language learners, immigrant students, rural low-income districts, and students facing neglect and delinquency.
Attorney General Nessel was joined by the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawai‘i, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, and Wisconsin.
