LANSING – Yesterday, Alex New, 55, a Branch County resident recently extradited from Florida, was sentenced to serve at least 58 years’ incarceration by Judge P. William O'Grady in the 15th Circuit Court in Branch County for sexually assaulting a minor, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. New was convicted by a Branch County jury in June of two counts of First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and one count of Second-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct. Judge O’Grady sentenced New to 25 to 50 years’ incarceration for each First-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct count and 8 to15 years’ incarceration for the Second-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct. The sentences will be served consecutively.
New was charged by the Branch County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office in 2016 but fled and eluded authorities before being located in Florida and returned to Branch County in June 2024 through Operation Survivor Justice. The Operation is a partnership between the Michigan Department of Attorney General, local county prosecutors, and the U.S. Marshals Service to locate, apprehend, and return to Michigan fugitive offenders with outstanding sexual assault warrants.
“Operation Survivor Justice continues to be a vital partnership, ensuring those who commit sexual assault face the consequences of their actions,” Nessel said. “I commend the courage of the survivor in coming forward, and I am grateful to the Branch County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Marshals Service, and the prosecutors in my office for their work securing this significant sentence.”
Following completion of a prison sentence, New would be subject to lifetime electronic monitoring.
