LANSING – Court-appointed Special Master Deborah Greenspan recently filed a notice (PDF) with the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan regarding the payment process and timing for the Flint Water Crisis settlements payments, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. According to the filing, eligible claimants will receive instructions this fall on how to obtain their payment through the official Flint Water payment portal. If claimants have already received a request for bank information related to the settlement, Special Master Greenspan advises claimants to not provide any information and to contact the Special Master’s office directly at 202-402-2200.
“While my office is not involved in distributing payments, I am relieved to see that this long-awaited process is finally moving forward,” Nessel said. “I urge every claimant to remain cautious, not share financial information with anyone outside of the official process, and immediately report suspicious requests to the Special Master’s office. These funds are meant to support Flint families, not line the pockets of scammers.”
The Flint Water Settlement Fund remains under the sole control of the United States District Court. Neither the lawyers, City of Flint, elected officials, nor the State of Michigan has authority or control over the fund. As of August 25, there have been 25,759 individuals approved for payment, including 13,169 children.
The Flint Water Crisis began in 2014 when the City of Flint switched to the Flint River as the city’s water source. Earlier this year, Attorney General Dana Nessel announced a $53 million payment by Veolia North America to benefit impacted Flint residents in settlement of the State of Michigan’s claims that the engineering company contributed to the crisis. This resolution followed the landmark $600+ million settlement announced in 2020 with the State of Michigan, the City of Flint, McLaren Regional Medical Center, and Rowe Professional Services Co. This remains the largest civil settlement in Michigan state history.
