LANSING – In their latest episode of Pantsuits and Lawsuits, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel and Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes discuss the urgent issue of gun violence, emphasizing the need for common-sense reforms and outlining how states can take meaningful action to save lives. During the episode, they are joined by Emma Brown, executive director at Giffords, an organization dedicated to ending gun violence across America.
Brown explains how Extreme Risk Protection Orders (ERPOs) give law enforcement a narrow, court-supervised tool to temporarily separate dangerous individuals from firearms, and why departments that once opposed ERPOs now rely on them. The discussion also highlights data linking safe storage to fewer youth deaths and the real-world impact of free gun locks distributed by police and pediatricians. Attorneys General Nessel and Mayes also confront the rise of ghost guns and conversion devices — unserialized parts and forced-reset triggers that undercut tracing, evade basic safeguards, and raise the risk for officers and communities.
“We’ve seen firsthand in Michigan how common-sense gun legislation can save lives,” Nessel said. “When states act and use tools like ERPOs and safe storage laws, we can prevent tragedies before they happen. I am grateful Emma was able to join us to share her expertise and for the work she continues to do to combat gun violence.”
