MPSC Approves $242.4 Million DTE Electric Rate Hike
February 19, 2026
LANSING – Today, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) approved yet another rate hike for DTE Electric customers, allowing the company to collect an additional $242,406,000 annually in revenue from its ratepayers. While the approved rate hike is 58% lower than DTE’s original request for a $574 million rate hike, due in part to Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s continued advocacy on behalf of ratepayers, it comes on the heels of last year’s $217 million electric rate hike, approved by the MPSC a mere three months before DTE announced their pursuit of today’s approved rate hike. Since 2020, the MPSC has approved more than $1 billion in annual revenue increases for DTE, despite continued reliability and affordability concerns.
DTE initially sought permission to raise residential customer electricity rates by 11%. In her filed testimony, the Attorney General argued for the MSPC to slash DTE’s rate hike down to 2.5% for Michigan households and called for a nearly 75% cut to the utility's rate hike request.
“As we experience a never-ending cycle of rate hikes, Michigan families are left wondering when enough will finally be enough,” said Attorney General Nessel. “Year after year, they are asked to dig deeper into their pockets to cover their utility bills, and while my office has been an unwavering advocate for consumers, at a certain point we must ask whether this system is truly serving the people it was designed to protect. Reliability and affordability should be a priority, yet time and again we see proposals from DTE and Consumers Energy that emphasize costly capital projects over commonsense investments that more directly reduce outages and improve services. All while DTE is projecting record profits, even as the utility asks customers to pay more. Michiganders deserve accountability and results from their ballooning utility bills, and I will continue to advocate for the ratepayers of this state ahead of our utility corporations’ profits and shareholder dividends.”
Since taking office, the Attorney General has helped save Michigan consumers more than $4 billion by intervening in utility cases before the MPSC. Additional rate hike cases currently open before the MPSC include DTE’s latest natural gas rate hike request (U-21973), as well as Consumers Energy’s electricity rate hike request (U-21870) and natural gas rate hike request (U-21981).
DTE sells electricity to approximately 2.3 million customers in Southeast Michigan and natural gas to 1.3 million customers across the state.
