Monroe Man Convicted of Assault with Intent to Murder, Witness Tampering

LANSING – Richard Dwayne Gray II, 34, of Monroe, was convicted by a Monroe County jury on April 24 following a three-day trial for a 2025 shooting incident and witness tampering, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. Gray was convicted of:

  • One count of Assault with Intent to Murder, a potential life-sentence offense;
  • One count of Discharge of a Firearm from a Motor Vehicle, a 10-year felony;
  • One count of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, a 5-year felony;
  • One count of Possession of Ammunition by a Prohibited Person, a 5-year felony;
  • Four counts of Felony Firearm, a 2-year felony; and
  • One count of Witness Tampering, a 4-year felony.

On March 16, 2025, Gray, who was on probation at the time for a drug-related offense, was involved in an altercation with adults in Monroe at the home of the 16-year-old victim. Later that same day, Gray returned to the victim’s home and fired a gun as he sped down the street. The victim was standing on the porch approximately four feet away from where the bullet struck. No injuries occurred during the incident.

Following the shooting, Gray repeatedly implicitly and explicitly pressured a witness not to testify in court.

“To keep our communities safe and ensure that offenders are held accountable, witnesses must be able to come forward without fear or intimidation,” said Attorney General Nessel. “Violent behavior and attempts to interfere in our legal process cannot be tolerated, and my office will continue to prosecute those who threaten the safety of residents and the integrity of our judicial system to the fullest extent of the law.”

Gray was initially charged by the Monroe County Prosecutor's Office in March 2025. The prosecution was handled by the Department of Attorney General.

Gray will be sentenced before Judge William Paul Nichols of the 38th Circuit Court in Monroe County on June 25.
