MI AG Nessel Issues Statement on Gov. Whitmer, Michigan Civil Rights Commission and Director Arbulu
August 14, 2019
LANSING - Attorney General Dana Nessel released the following statement regarding Governor Whitmer, the Michigan Civil Rights Commission and Director Arbulu.
“Recent statements about and from the Michigan Civil Rights Commission as to the future of Director Arbulu have created some confusion. As to the governor’s power to request information from the Commission, that power is broad and is in no way limited by the Open Meetings Act. Moreover, the suggestion that the Commission’s power to terminate the employment of Director Arbulu is limited to the particular employment offense at issue in the July 16, 2019 investigative report is wrong. The director is an unclassified employee who serves at the pleasure of the Commission.”
