Court of Appeals Affirms 2023 Arson Conviction of Plymouth Man

LANSING – Yesterday, the Michigan Court of Appeals affirmed the conviction of Patrick Nolan, 44, of Plymouth, who intentionally burned down a home in 2019, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. A Wayne County jury found Nolan guilty of one count of Arson of an Insured Dwelling and one count of 2nd Degree Arson in October 2023. He was sentenced to 7-20 years’ incarceration and ordered to pay $272,581 in restitution to the insurer of the home.

In the early hours of January 1, 2019, the Plymouth Township Police and Fire Departments responded to a house fire. Nolan owned the home and subsequently attempted to make an insurance claim on the loss, having started the fire himself for this purpose.

“Arson is not a victimless crime,” Nessel said. “It endangers lives, destroys property, and raises insurance costs for honest homeowners. I am grateful the Court upheld Mr. Nolan’s conviction and remain committed to working with the Department of Insurance and Financial Services to hold those who engage in this dangerous and deceitful conduct accountable.”

The Department of Attorney General worked alongside the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) Fraud Investigation Unit (FIU) to investigate this case.

“We are proud to work closely with the Attorney General to investigate and prosecute those who commit insurance fraud, as it increases costs for all consumers and businesses in Michigan,” said DIFS Director Anita Fox. “Michiganders who suspect fraud can report it online or by calling DIFS at 877-999-6442 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.”

The DIFS FIU investigates criminal and fraudulent activity related to the insurance and financial markets and works with the Attorney General and other law enforcement to prosecute these crimes. Suspected insurance fraud can be reported to DIFS safely, easily and, in most cases, anonymously by calling 877-999-6442 or online by visiting DIFS' website.
