Former Hillsdale County Man Pleads to Second-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct

LANSING – Yesterday, Kevin Murphy, 58, a former Hillsdale County resident most recently residing in Kentucky, pled no contest to one count of Second-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct for sexually assaulting a minor victim in 2025, announced Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel. A second count of Second-Degree Criminal Sexual Conduct for sexually assaulting a second minor will be dismissed at the time of sentencing. However, the plea establishes that crime victim rights for both assaults will be attached to his conviction, ensuring both minor survivors, aged 9 and 12 at the time of the assaults, maintain their victim rights before the Court.

Murphy was initially charged by the Hillsdale County Prosecutor’s Office in October 2025. Murphy was extradited to Michigan from Kentucky through Operation Survivor Justice in March 2026. The Operation is a partnership between the Michigan Department of Attorney General, local county prosecutors, and the U.S. Marshals Service to locate, apprehend, and return to Michigan fugitive offenders with outstanding sexual assault warrants.

“It takes tremendous courage for survivors of sexual assault to come forward, especially at such a young age,” said Attorney General Nessel. “I am incredibly grateful to the victims for their bravery and for the hard work of the prosecutors and U.S. Marshals involved in Operation Survivor Justice. Their efforts helped take a predator off our streets, and I hope this conviction brings the survivors a sense of justice and peace.”

Murphy is scheduled to be sentenced on June 29, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. in the 1st Circuit Court in Hillsdale County before Judge Sara Lisznyai.
