AG Nessel Secures More Than $3.4 Billion for Michiganders Against Unlawful Federal Actions
June 29, 2026
LANSING – Since the Trump administration took office in January 2025, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has taken action to protect the rights, services, and federal funding that Michigan residents depend on. Following numerous successful challenges to illegal policies by the Trump administration, she is highlighting the actions the Department of Attorney General has taken to defend Michiganders and uphold the rule of law.
Attorney General Nessel has filed 56 lawsuits challenging illegal federal actions and recouped more than $3.453 billion in Michigan taxpayer money. Through this litigation, her office has secured nearly 40 wins through court orders or the federal government withdrawing or reversing unlawful policies following challenges. These lawsuits span a wide range of critical issues and have protected Michigan residents from the dismantlement of public services, the erosion of privacy, and violations of constitutional rights.
“I will not stand idly by while the Trump administration threatens the well-being of Michigan residents and upends the rule of law,” said Attorney General Nessel. “My office has fought to ensure that billions in funding continue to rightfully reach Michiganders. Whether we are defending public education, healthcare, disaster relief, or your constitutional rights, our priority has and will continue to be protecting the people of this state.”
Through numerous lawsuits, Attorney General Nessel has preserved funding for statewide library services, disaster mitigation, public health, education, mental health resources for students, medical research funding, and services for crime victims. Other actions protected funding for wind energy projects, electric vehicle infrastructure, and state energy programs. The Attorney General has also successfully blocked illegal terms and conditions on funding Michiganders rely on, including transportation, disaster relief, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and housing assistance.
Attorney General Nessel has also blocked policies detrimental to residents, including unlawful tariffs, the construction of an ICE detention center in Romulus, and the imposition of a $100,000 tax payment on new H-1B visa petitions that alleviate nationwide labor shortages in frontline fields. Additional lawsuits halted the slashing of AmeriCorps services, the reinterpretation of a decades-old law governing access to social services, the dismantling of the Department of Health and Human Services, and attempts to limit birthright citizenship, which the Supreme Court is expected to rule on this week.
The Attorney General’s actions have further protected the personal information of Michigan residents who use Medicaid and SNAP and preserved the state’s ability to administer programs without unlawful federal intrusion. The Department of Attorney General has additionally successfully fought federal actions that violate constitutional rights, including attempts to eliminate access to transgender care for young people, impose sweeping voting restrictions nationwide, and interfere with states' constitutional authority to administer elections.
To help Michiganders stay informed, the Department created the Federal Actions Tracker. The tracker provides up-to-date information on the Attorney General's legal actions in response to unlawful federal policies and orders.
