LANSING – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel has filed a lawsuit against Chosen Kingdom Builders (PDF), a Waterford-based nonprofit, and its president Kwanzel Revon Howerton, for allegedly luring Southeast Michigan property owners and tenants into leases by misrepresenting the extent of its funding and housing assistance and omitting material facts. The lawsuit, filed in the 30th Circuit Court in Ingham County, seeks injunctive relief under the Michigan Consumer Protection Act, the removal of Howerton from the board of directors, and the dissolution of the nonprofit.
“While it is noble to try to help those in need, these alleged deceptive practices harmed vulnerable people in our communities searching for secure housing,” said Attorney General Nessel. “Our laws exist to protect Michigan residents from conduct that jeopardizes their stability, and my office will continue to pursue entities that threaten public safety and welfare.”
Chosen Kingdom Builders and Howerton’s alleged actions resulted in tenants being subject to evictions and property owners losing hundreds of thousands of dollars. Attorney General Nessel also alleges that Chosen Kingdom Builders operated without a required real estate license and negligently rented or attempted to rent homes without conducting proper inspections.
