AG Nessel Issues New Consumer Alert on Unauthorized Access to MiBusiness Registry Portal Accounts
March 17, 2026
LANSING – Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel today issued a new consumer alert after third-party entities requested access to businesses through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs’ (LARA) MiBusiness Registry Portal. The portal is the online system businesses use to submit filings to the LARA Corporations, Securities and Commercial Licensing Bureau (CSCL). The unaffiliated users have been removed from all accounts. No documents were submitted without permission, and the system does not provide access to any non-public information.
On February 24, two users requested access to more than 6,000 businesses despite having no affiliation with the businesses. The first, identified as Developer Research, requested access to 5,084 entities. The second, identified as John Wick, requested access to 978 entities.
When an access request is submitted, LARA sends an alert email to the business’s resident agent so they are aware of the request and that the user can submit documents on behalf of the entity. While most access requests are legitimately submitted by authorized representatives, this safeguard helped quickly identify the recent improper requests.
“While no sensitive information was compromised, it’s important that MiBusiness Registry Portal account holders carefully review their accounts to ensure their records remain secure and have a current email address on file,” said Attorney General Nessel. “Regularly monitoring activity in your portal and immediately reporting any suspicious activity to LARA can save your business time, money, and unnecessary disruption.”
Attorney General Nessel encourages businesses to:
- Have an updated email address for the entity’s resident agent on file with LARA CSCL to receive timely notifications.
- Check files in the portal at least once every three months.
- Review each filing to make sure everything is correct.
- If you see filings you did not approve contact LARA at 517-241-9223 or via email. Read all emails you receive from LARA.
- Check your spam folder for any emails from LARA. If your emails from LARA are being directed to the spam folder, mark them as a safe sender to ensure they’re sent to the main mailbox.
Businesses should also watch out for scammers pretending to be LARA. LARA CSCL uses noreply-micorporationsdivision@mail.michigan.gov, LARA-CSCL-CorpInfo@michigan.gov, and LARA-CSCL-CorpsMail@michigan.gov when contacting businesses.
The Attorney General also encourages business owners to visit Michigan’s Consumer Protection Page and learn more about the different forms of identity theft that target small businesses, along with tips to better protect your business from these growing scams.
