MSHDA Welcomes National Housing Leaders to Detroit for Annual Conference
National gathering provides opportunity to showcase Michigan’s housing innovations and exchange ideas to strengthen communities across the country

DETROIT, Mich. – The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) is hosting housing leaders from across the country in Detroit this week for the National Council of State Housing Agencies’ (NCSHA) 2026 Annual Conference & Showplace. The conference brings together state housing agencies and their partners to discuss housing challenges, share solutions and expand opportunities for residents nationwide.

The members-only conference, running Oct. 3-6, gives Michigan an opportunity to highlight its housing work and learn from approaches being used in other states.

“MSHDA has had four record-breaking years of housing investment and production. We’re doing great work across Michigan to address our housing challenges, and we know we’re not alone in that effort,” said Amy Hovey, MSHDA’s chief executive officer and executive director. “Hosting this conference in Detroit gives us an opportunity to share what we’re learning here in our state, hear what’s working in other states and build relationships that help move our work forward. At the heart of it all is a shared commitment to making sure more people have access to safe, quality, affordable housing.”

MSHDA works with public, private and philanthropic partners to expand housing opportunities through initiatives such as the Tobias Harris Homeownership Initiative in Detroit, the Employer-Assisted Housing Program and Housing Tax Increment Financing. These programs use different financing approaches to support first-generation homebuyers, Michigan’s workforce and affordable housing development.

Hovey credits NCSHA colleagues in other states with helping inspire Michigan’s State Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program. After seeing the impact of similar programs elsewhere, she pursued a state credit that received bipartisan legislative support and was signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer this summer. The program is expected to provide another tool to finance affordable housing across Michigan beginning early next year.

“Michigan was one of the first states to create a housing finance agency, helping create a nationwide network that now provides $55 billion in financing to serve 300,000 households every year,” said NCSHA Executive Director Stockton Williams. “The conference in Detroit this week will generate new ideas for addressing the housing affordability challenge around the country.”

The conference comes as Michigan works to address a shortage of nearly 97,000 housing units and expand access to homes for residents at different income levels. MSHDA’s Statewide Housing Plan guides efforts to increase housing supply, preserve existing homes and strengthen communities through partnerships across the state.

“Every state brings its own experiences, challenges and solutions to this work,” said Hovey, a member of the NCSHA Board of Directors. “The opportunity to learn from one another, build partnerships and bring new ideas home is incredibly valuable. We’re proud to welcome our national colleagues to Detroit and share the work happening in communities across Michigan.”
