Housing Choice Voucher Program (HCV)

The Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program is the federal government's major program for assisting very low-income families, the elderly, and the disabled to afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. Since housing assistance is provided on behalf of the family or individual, participants are able to find their own housing, including single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments.

Housing Choice Vouchers are administered by Public Housing Agencies (PHAs) using funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) is the largest statewide PHA in the country and currently assisting over 29,000 families across all 83 counties in Michigan.

Spotlight

In the event of a federal government shutdown, MSHDA does not anticipate an impact on the Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) program, or the funding needed to continue making payments to HCV participants and landlords. If you have any questions regarding your HCV assistance, please contact your assigned Housing Agent.
