Fiscal Year Guidance
Deadlines and Key Dates
Most Research and Development (R&D) Tax Credit deadlines and key dates for fiscal year Corporate Income Tax (CIT) filers generally align with those for calendar year CIT filers, except for the tax return due date, which follows the business’s tax year.
- MQREs Incurred: January – December of the expense year
- R&D Credit Application Deadline
- For expense year 2025: April 1, 2026
- For later years: March 15 following the expense year
- Proration Notice Expected: April following the expense year
- Tax Return and Final Claim Due: Last day of the fourth month after the end of the tax year, plus extension if applicable
The expense year is the calendar year when the Michigan Qualified R&D Expenses (MQREs) were incurred.
Fiscal year CIT filers generally claim the R&D Tax Credit based on MQREs incurred during the expense year that ends within their tax year.
Calendar Year Reporting Requirement
To claim the R&D Tax Credit, all eligible CIT filers must report their MQREs and base amount based on the calendar year.
For expense year 2028 and later, fiscal year CIT filers must track their MQREs based on the calendar year they were incurred. For expense years 2025-2027, Treasury will allow fiscal year filers to convert their prior year MQREs to the calendar year when calculating their base amount for the R&D Tax Credit.
