Is "Marihuana" Misspelled?
The spelling of cannabis has a long history. The "marijuana" and "marihuana" spellings are used in different contexts and are both acceptable. Currently, Treasury is in a transition period to better align with common practices and reduce fragmented terminology. We are methodically updating our tax systems and processes to use:
- “Marijuana” as the default spelling in all public-facing communications, forms and instructions, and education materials. The term “cannabis” is also acceptable and may be used interchangeably with “marijuana.”
- "Marihuana" as the default spelling in legal contexts to match the reference to cannabis in both the Michigan Regulation And Taxation of Marihuana Act (MRTMA) and the Comprehensive Road Funding Tax Act (CRFTA) statutes.
