Which Form Should You File?

If you qualified for the credit in the past and didn't file for it, you have up to four years from the date the original return was due to claim the credit.


MI-1040CR

Use the Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit Claim (MI-1040CR) if:

  • your homestead is in Michigan, and
  • you have been a Michigan resident for at least 6 months in the year you are filing.

MI-1040CR-2

Use the Homestead Property Tax Credit Claim for Veterans and Blind People (MI-1040CR-2) if you:

  • are blind and own your homestead;
  • are a veteran with a service-connected disability, or
  • are a surviving spouse of a veteran deceased in service;

OR your total household resources are less than $7,500 and you are:

  • a pensioned veteran and/or their surviving spouse, or
  • a surviving spouse of a non-pensioned veteran of the Korean War, WWI, WWII, or
  • active in the military.
If you qualify to complete the MI-1040CR-2, you should also complete the MI-1040CR and file whichever gives you the larger credit.
