The Michigan Department of Treasury has been made aware that some "Reminder of Tax Due" letters sent to taxpayers contain an incorrect toll-free (1-800) TTY number, which may connect callers to a potential scam. Taxpayers with questions regarding unpaid individual income taxes are asked to contact the Treasury directly at 517-636-4486. We apologize for any confusion or concern this may have caused.
What should I do if I have a check/energy draft for a deceased taxpayer?
Write “VOID” across the face of the check/draft and mail it with a request for replacement, along with the following documents:
- A Claim for Refund Due a Deceased Taxpayer MI-1310 with death certificate, or
- Letters of Authority if appointed Personal Representative by the court
Note: Do not use the Authorized Representative Declaration Power of Attorney (form 151) for a deceased taxpayer.
Allow 16 weeks to receive a response for returned checks.
