The Michigan Department of Treasury has been made aware that some "Reminder of Tax Due" letters sent to taxpayers contain an incorrect toll-free (1-800) TTY number, which may connect callers to a potential scam. Taxpayers with questions regarding unpaid individual income taxes are asked to contact the Treasury directly at 517-636-4486. We apologize for any confusion or concern this may have caused.
How many years do I have to claim an income tax refund, homestead property tax credit or home heating credit for a prior year?
You have four years from the due date of the original return to claim an income tax refund or homestead property tax credit.
A home heating credit claim cannot be filed for prior years. A home heating credit claim for tax year 2024 must be received by September 30, 2025. An extension of time to file does not extend the due date. If the home heating credit is received after September 30th, the credit will be denied.
