Allen Park High School Library Media Center named 21st Century Model School Library
October 3, 2023
LANSING – The Allen Park High School Library Media Center, part of the Allen Park Public Schools, has earned the state’s 21st Century Model School Library (SL 21) award for the 2023-2024 school year, the Library of Michigan announced today.
The Allen Park High School Library Media Center, with library media specialist Melissa Lambert, is a place where Ms. Lambert’s collaboration with teaching staff and a partnership with the local public library have created an engaging, active learning environment for Allen Park High School students and teachers.
The Allen Park High School Library Media Center was selected for the Model SL 21 honor for its focus on engaging students and teachers where they are and bringing resources and activities to them – including over 200 collaborative lessons last year with teaching colleagues and Maker Stations, interactive book displays, Hour of Code, and March is Reading month programming in the library.
“Literacy is critical for academic achievement, and school libraries need to be an integral part of our literacy improvement efforts in schools across the state and country,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice. “It is great to see the success that Ms. Lambert and the media center have had at Allen Park High School.”
State Librarian Randy Riley said the quality of the outreach and programming available to the Allen Park High School community is a testament to Lambert’s and Principal Jason Skiba’s focus on providing a high-quality educational environment for students.
“Students need to learn through a variety of experiences,” Riley said. “The activities and content that the school and school library are providing ensure that Allen Park’s students have the resources they need to achieve.”
The Model SL 21 program recognizes high-quality school libraries and library media specialists and promotes the development of similar initiatives in other schools. The program is based on the Library of Michigan's School Library 21st Century benchmarks. The Allen Park High School Library Media Center holds Exemplary status in the SL 21 program through March 2026.
Allen Park High School Library Media Center staff are available to consult with school district leaders, school librarians, and educators who want to develop or expand their vision for their school library programs.
