The Library of Michigan is pleased to furnish public library trustees with resources to help support them in their work. While articles for trustees are intended to be as accurate as possible, the information here may be superseded. Please contact your attorney with specific legal questions.
Training for trustees is available through a variety of resources, including regularly scheduled webinars on a variety of topics. Trustees can view upcoming training offered by LM on our events site. Trustee resources and training available for the Michigan library community can also be found online at United for Libraries Statewide Access for Michigan. Additional trustee training resources are provided below. Current trustees will also receive regular email updates from the Library of Michigan with short articles on timely topics and notices of on resources and training available for trustees. LM also provides a variety of legal resources in our Library Law section of the web site.
United for Libraries
The Library of Michigan provides a statewide membership in United for Libraries, a division of the American Library Association, for all Michigan public libraries. Access the members only resources online through the United for Libraries website. Choose the "Statewide Access - Find Your State" blue bar and follow the instructions to create your own member account courtesy of LM. Online training, webinars, toolkits and other support resources are available through the statewide membership. This project was made possible in part by the Institute of Museum and Library Services.

The Trustee Toolkit: Hiring a Library Director Intended for use by library board members or trustees when faced with the important task of hiring a new leader to run their library. The kit contains sample timelines, job ads, interview questions, offer letters, job descriptions and more.
