Law Library patrons are encouraged to self-educate on the law applicable to their particular facts and circumstances. The law librarian staffing the reference desk is ready to direct patrons to law reference resources in the collection. Law librarians are not permitted to provide legal advice. Reference assistance cannot be provided in a way that requires the law librarians to interpret any law and/or facts offered by a patron.
The State Law Library receives many offers of Michigan legal titles from now-closed law practices and law firms. As the number of practitioners requiring medium and large print libraries decrease, and the number of practitioners with digital-only research collections increase, the market for used print legal titles has reached a low point.
With very few exceptions, the State Law Library has multiple copies of every Michigan law book and does not have the space or capacity to accept any more as gifts. Prospective book donors may send us a list of titles to LMLawLib@Michigan.gov; we’re happy to review them for filling any gaps in our collections, but we regret that we rarely can accept any.
State Law Library staff are not aware of any libraries looking for gifts of this kind. The reality is that most collections of this nature are recycled. Lawbook Exchange, Ltd.: www.LawBookExchange.com will buy and sell law practitioner titles on a limited basis; eBay is a place to offer book collections to decorators, photographers, or theater groups. Better World Books www.BetterWorldBooks.com will possibly accept donations.
