Alger County area was organized in 1885 after being set off from Schoolcraft County. It was named for lumber baron and former U.S. Senator and Governor of Michigan, Alexander Alger.
Its county seat is Munising. Adjacent counties are Luce, Delta, Marquette and Schoolcraft.
