Baraga County was created 19 Feb 1875 from Houghton County and was assigned jurisdiction over Lake Superior concurrent with “the counties contiguous thereto,” 1875 PA 14. The county was named for Slovenian Catholic missionary Frederic Baraga (1797-1868), first bishop of the Diocese of Marquette.
