One of Michigan’s ‘cabinet counties’ Barry County was named for U.S. Postmaster William T. Barry, a member of Andrew Jackson’s cabinet to curry favor with the administration for support during the conflict with Ohio over the Toledo Strip and the quest for statehood. The county was formed by Michigan’s territorial legislature in 1829 and formally organized in 1839. It currently has 16 townships, 4 villages and one city, Hastings, the county seat.
Barry County is located in the southwest region of the Michigan’s lower peninsula and is adjacent to Ionia, Eaton, Calhoun, Kalamazoo, Allegan and Kent counties.
