Benzie

Benzie, the smallest of Michigan’s 83 counties in terms of land area, includes part of the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The name is derived from the French name for saw-bill ducks, “bec-scie,” which evolved into “Betsie” and eventually “Benzie.” Benzie County was set off from Leelanau County in 1863 and organized by 1869 PA 385. The county canvassers were then directed by PA 385 to meet at the home of John Bailey of Benzonia to appoint the county’s first officers and begin discharge of their duties.
