Berrien
René-Robert Cavalier, Sieur de La Salle built Fort Miami at the mouth of the St. Joseph River at the present site of St. Joseph in 1679. Fort St. Joseph was built up river at present day Niles soon after, signifying the importance placed on the strategic trading locations near Lake Michigan. The combination of valuable water routes and a climate suitable for fruit growing made the Berrien County region highly desirable for Euro-American settlers, who poured into the area in the early 1830s; the county was founded in 1831. Many early settlers in Berrien County were first generation Americans traveling from Virginia, Pennsylvania and locales on the Ohio river after the Revolution. With stops on the early stage coach routes between Chicago and Detroit, it continued to grow in population with the coming of the railway. Situated an hour from Chicago and linked to Detroit via train, residents could access both urban hubs with relative ease. In addition to: peaches, apples, cherries and blueberries, the region is known for its grapes and wineries. Berrien County is home to the sandy Warren Dunes State Park.
