Charlevoix

When first set off in 1840 it was named Keskauko, which was changed to Charlevoix in 1843.  Father Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, like Joliet, was an explorer who traveled the Great Lakes looking for a route to the Pacific Ocean.  In the area that is now Charlevoix county there is evidence of repeated settlements dating back to the B. C. era.  Due to its water-centric geography, the first settlers were primary fishermen and farmers along the shoreline.  Settlement was slow until the Grand Rapids & Indiana Railroad completed a line through the county in the 1870s which paralleled the boom in the lumber industry after the Civil War.  After the decline in the lumber industry the county has depended on small industries, farming and a continuous increase in tourism.  Beaver Island is administered by Charlevoix County.
