Originally laid off as Kaykakee County in 1840 and named for a local Native American chief, Clare was renamed in 1843, likely by a surveyor honoring his birthplace in County Clare, Ireland. For judicial and municipal purposes, it was attached to various other neighboring counties for many years until it was officially organized as a free-standing county in 1871. The county seat is Harrison.
Clare County ‘Where the north begins’ is located in the center of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, divided into 16 townships and surrounded by Missaukee, Roscommon, Osceola, Isabella and Gladwin counties.
