Genesee County was named after Genesee County, NY, which had been named for a Seneca Indian word, Gen-nis-hee-yo, meaning ‘the beautiful valley’. It was created in 1835 from territory taken from Lapeer, Shiawassee and Saginaw counties but was attached to Oakland County for judicial purposes. It was organized as a county in 1837.
The county seat is Flint. Contiguous counties are Lapeer, Tuscola, Saginaw, Shiawassee, Livingston and Oakland.
