Gladwin

Gladwin County is named for Major General Henry Gladwin, the British commander at the 1763 Siege of Detroit.  Territory identified as Gladwin County was laid off in 1831, but not organized until 1875, with judicial and municipal control handled by neighboring Saginaw and Midland counties in the intervening years.   Home to members of the Sauk, Ojibway and Menominee tribes, the first European settler did not arrive until 1861.

There are 15 townships and two cities in the county.  Gladwin, the county seat, was originally known as Cedar, and incorporated in 1893. Surrounding counties include Ogemaw, Arenac, Bay, Midland, Clare and Roscommon.
