Houghton was originally created from Marquette and Ontonagon Counties (then attached to Chippewa), 19 Mar 1845; fully organized 18 May 1846. 1846 PA 157. At one point, Isle Royale was part of the county “for judicial purposes” but was unattached in 1897, 1897 PA 65. Houghton County was named for Douglass Houghton (1809-1845), first State of Michigan geologist, physician, and Mayor of Detroit 1842-43.
