Kalkaska

The first name of Kalkaska County, when the County was defined in 1840, was Wabassee.  By 1843, the name became Kalkaska. The first non-native settler was William Copeland.  He established his residence in Clearwater Township in 1855.  The township of Rapid River was the first section to be established.  In 1873, the village of Kalkaska was designated as the county seat. There are twelve townships in Kalkaska County: Bear Lake, Blue Lake, Boardman, Clearwater, Coldsprings, Excelsior, Garfield, Kalkaska, Oliver, Orange, Rapid River, and Springfield. The communities in Kalkaska County are the village of Kalkaska, Lodi (not to be confused with the one in Washtenaw County), Rapid City, and South Boardman.
