Keweenaw was set aside from Houghton County in 1861. 1861 PA 118; 1862 PA ex.sess. 2-3. In 1897, Isle Royale, which had been a separate county, was reorganized to join Keweenaw. 1897 PA 65. Keweenaw County is said to have been named after an Ojibwe word meaning “portage.”
