Lenawee County was formed, but not fully organized, in 1822 from Monroe County. It included part of the strip of land disputed between Michigan and Ohio. It was fully organized in 1826. Mich Terr. Laws 2:292. When the boundary dispute was settled in 1836, Lenawee lost territory, 5 Stat. 49. The name Lenawee is said to be derived from a Native American word—tribe undetermined —meaning “man” or “male”.
