Marquette
Marquette County area was set off and attached to Chippewa County in 1843. With boundary changes it was attached to Houghton County in 1846 and organized in its own right in 1851. It was named for Father Jacque Marquette, a Jesuit missionary who was an early visitor to the area. It is the largest county in Michigan measured by land area.
The city of Marquette is the county seat. Adjacent counties are Alger, Delta, Menominee, Dickinson, Iron and Baraga.
