The Mecosta County area was set off in 1840 but was administered by Kent County until 1857. Its county government was organized in 1859. It was named after Chief Mecosta, the leader of the Potawatomi tribe, and one of the signers of the 1836 Treaty of Washington. It was initially part of a lumber boom because of its waterways.
The county seat is Big Rapids. Contiguous counties are Newaygo, Montcalm, Isabella and Osceola.
