Presque Isle
Presque Isle County is named after a geological formation where only a small strip of land attaches an island to a mainland. In 1839, a survey party reported the land as useless, yet the county was set off in 1840. To the Native Americans it was prime hunting ground, with the area between the Ocqueoc and Swan Rivers considered sacred and divided among bands. Arriving by boat, early Euro-Americans worked in lumber, farming, and fishing. In 1868, a former U.S army officer led a surveying party and identified the value in the standing timber, which spurred the logging industry and the development of a county government in 1871. Notable was the abundance of Rock Maple in the region which was used in early bicycle tires and steering wheels. In 1907, a visiting geologist recognized the rich deposits of limestone which would eventually be known as the largest limestone source in the world and became the foundation for the Michigan Limestone and Chemical Company of Calcite. Historically dependent on water-based industry, Presque Isle County is also home to mid-19th century fieldstone buildings, sandy beaches and large tracks of recreational land.
