The Michigan Department of Treasury has been made aware that some "Reminder of Tax Due" letters sent to taxpayers contain an incorrect toll-free (1-800) TTY number, which may connect callers to a potential scam. Taxpayers with questions regarding unpaid individual income taxes are asked to contact the Treasury directly at 517-636-4486. We apologize for any confusion or concern this may have caused.
Installment Agreement
If you owe a state debt and cannot pay your balance in full:
You may qualify for monthly payments with an installment agreement. While on an approved installment agreement:
- Penalties and interest will continue to accrue until the balance is paid in full.
- A tax lien may be placed to protect the state’s interest in resolving the debt.
- Your Michigan tax refund will be redirected to your collections account and applied to the end of the plan, which may shorten the length of the arrangement.
- New debts and missed payments may cancel your plan and collection actions may resume.
What is required?
- Treasury will ask for information from you including a proposed monthly payment amount.
- Treasury may ask you for documentation to prove your monthly income, monthly expenses, assets, and other debts.
- If your payment plan is not approved right away, make your payment while Treasury reviews your request.
How to request an installment agreement:
You can request an installment agreement in one of three ways:
- Use the Collections eService – you need information from any Treasury collections letter sent to you in order to connect to your account. Visit the Help Center for guidance based on the type of debt.
- Download, complete, and mail the Installment Agreement form.
- Call the Collection Services Bureau at (517) 636-5265.
