What Does the Estimator Do?

The estimator helps you determine the amounts you may claim as rent or property taxes on your Homestead Property Tax Credit Claim (MI-140CR or MI-1040CR-2).

Who Should Not Use the Estimator?

Do not use this estimator if the taxpayer:

  • Moved out of Michigan and back into Michigan in the tax year
  • Was not a resident of Michigan
  • Is filing separately from their spouse and shared a home they are both claiming
  • Resided in tax-exempt housing

What Do You Need Before Using the Estimator?

Homeowners

All property tax statements (winter/summer/village) for each residence during the year.

Renters

The amount of rent paid for each residence during the year.

Do not include any amounts that are itemized out of your rent, such as water, heat, and garbage. This is not an exhaustive list.

Results are only as accurate as the information you enter. This tool is meant as a guide only.
