Carpenter Elementary has Michigan's First 21st Century Model Library
May 27, 2016 LANSING – Exhibiting the tools and vision of how technology can impact learning, Carpenter Elementary School Library is the state’s inaugural Model 21st Century School Library (SL 21), the Library of Michigan (LM) announced today. The school library, part of Lake Orion Community Schools in northeast Oakland County, won the SL 21 honor for its coordinated technology curriculum; community collaboration, especially with the Orion Township Public Library; and professional activities promoting school libraries statewide. State Librarian Randy Riley said Technology and Library Specialist Jeannine Crissman and Principal Adam Weldon stand out for their efforts at the school library. “Successful students in our modern world are those who have a nuanced understanding of technology and information sources. The library program and staff at Carpenter Elementary are putting their students firmly on the road to success,” Riley said. The Model SL 21 program recognizes high-quality schools and library media specialists and promotes the development of similar initiatives in other schools. The program is based on the LM’s School Library 21st Century benchmarks (http://www.michigan.gov/documents/mde/lm_SL21_313134_7.pdf). The Carpenter Elementary School Library holds Exemplary status in the SL 21 program through May 2019. Its designation as Michigan’s Model 21st School Library is for 2016-17. LM staff select the Model SL 21 Library after reviewing applications from school librarians across the state. Applicants provide information such as curriculum, co-teaching activities, community collaboration, and participation in educational associations. Carpenter Elementary School Library staff are available for consultation with and visits from other educators who want to learn more about the successful program.
