LANSING – Information-seekers will find an expanded Michigan eLibrary (MeL) thanks to upcoming digital content upgrades, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) announced today.
“The new and ongoing databases in MeL are designed to meet the evolving general information and academic needs of Michiganders,” State Superintendent Brian Whiston said. “MeL is always a great resource for students, educators and the general public; and soon it’ll be even better.”
Available at http://mel.org, MeL offers a statewide shared catalog with inter-loan service (MeLCat), subscription databases, digital Michigan history resources and supporting websites – available at no cost to all Michigan residents.
Beginning October 1, new to the MeL resources will be:
• Britannica School from Encyclopedia Britannica. This PreK-12 eResource of three encyclopedias yields thousands of up-to-date, curated, and curriculum-relevant articles and multi-media content
• GaleCengage’s Research in Context. This resource is of special interest to middle schoolers, their teachers and parents, and is designed to develop learning skills to propel the students into high school
MeL continues to provide a variety of Gale databases with content for students and adults, along with other eResources from publisher/aggregators LearningExpress and ProQuest, such as the ever-popular LearningExpress Library, used for preparing for college entrance, GED and other exams; and HeritageQuest Online for family history research.
“Libraries of all types and their patrons throughout the state benefit from MeL subscription resources”, said State Librarian Randy Riley. “Using MeL’s core eResources frees up funding for individual libraries to purchase other resources that are of specific interest to those in their service areas.”
The upgrades are the result of a review of MeL’s content subscriptions and selection process, funded by the Library Services and Technology Act via the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
