Conversation Camp for Library Leaders

Conversation Camp For Library Leaders

The Library of Michigan invites up to 50 public and academic library directors, managers, or supervisors to participate in a Conversation Camp: led by Library Development Manager, Michelle Bradley. This two-day, in-person program will include two workshops: Conversations Worth Having, and Strategic Conversations.

Conversations Worth Having

Communication remains the top issue for organizations, teams, and relationships. Most people struggle to effectively communicate when they are frustrated, angry, hurt, or facing conflict. The effects of poor communication are costly. This workshop will help you establish communication practices that will support productivity, engagement, high performance, regular feedback, positivity, and a culture of “we.”

Conversations Worth Having includes four modules:
Module 1: The Power of Conversation
Module 2: The Art of Asking Questions
Module 3: Intentional Framing
Module 4: Step Up to Feedback

Strategic Conversations

Develop your value as a leader by combining strategic thinking and planning with strategic conversations. Strategic Conversations will teach you how to use the SOAR Framework to support strategic conversations at all levels of an organization; deepen your understanding of the value of scaling strategic conversations to include the whole system and explore the Appreciative Inquiry 5-D Cycle, Design Thinking, World Café, and Open Space Technology.

Strategic Conversations consists of four modules:
Module 1: Strategic Thinking and Mindset
Module 2: SOAR Conversations
Module 3: The Appreciative Inquiry 5-D Cycle
Module 4: Whole System Engagement Processes

Course Descriptions and Learning Outcome

What is Expected of Participants?

These highly experiential courses are built upon Berrett Kohler’s bestseller, Conversations Worth Having: Using Appreciative Inquiry to Fuel Productive and Meaningful Engagement by Cheri Torres and Jackie Stavros. It is highly recommended that participants read the book before attending Conversation Camp. LM will provide participants with a copy of the book, along with a copy of “Learning to SOAR: Creating Strategy that INSPIRES Innovation and Engagement, by Jackie Stavros and Gina Hinrichs. These books will be shipped directly to participants in July.
Participants must attend both days of the Conversation Camp. LM will provide participants with a stipend to cover travel and lodging costs, which will be the responsibility of the participants. The stipend will be disbursed to the participant’s library after the workshops. The stipend amount is a flat rate based on the distance from the participant’s library to the Library of Michigan.

  • Less than 100 miles $300
  • Between 101 and 250 miles $600
  • More than 250 miles $850

In addition to the stipend, LM will cover the cost of course materials and course content, a $1,498.00 per person value.
