Cheboygan
Cheboygan County was set off in 1840 greeting its first permanent settlers in 1844. Its name derives from the Ojibwa language. Native Americans utilized the 45 mile Inland Waterway that runs from Lake Huron through the Cheboygan River, Mullet Lake and Indian River to Burt Lake, then up the Crooked River to Crooked Lake and over a short portage to Little Traverse Bay thus avoiding the Straits of Mackinac. Later this same route would become a prime tourist attraction for Euro-American boaters, cottagers and leisure seekers. During the lumbering era of 1870 – 1910, Cheboygan County experienced a population boom. The Cheboygan Slack Water Navigation Company vessels carried passengers to the region until the railway was developed in the region. After the decline of the lumber industry and the parallel drop in population, commercial fishing took over peaking in the 1920s. Though diminished by the invasion of the Sea Lamprey, fishing is still of mainstay of the economy as well as modest lumbering, farming and increased tourism.
